sitting in his 18th-century farmhouse in the uplands of bethlehem, in the breathtaking western reaches of the brecon beacons, ian rickman ponders the damage brexit has done to his future. two years since the uk quit the eu, the future for mountain sheep-farmers such as him is full of economic precarity.

he has lost unfettered access to his nearest export market, faces reduction in farm subsidies as the result of the loss of the common agricultural policy (cap), and has been disadvantaged by trade deals giving access to the uk market to rival farmers from australia and new zealand.

but the national farmers’ unx (nfu) and the fuw fear for the small farmers who are dependent on the cap. mps on the welsh affairs committee expressed concern in 2022 “that around a fifth of welsh farms had a farm business income of less than zero” with an average income of £26,000 per farm. government research shows that the subsidy is the difference between profit and loss for 42% of farms in the uk.

the progressive phasing out of the cap has left farmers at least 20% down this year and they will be short by 50% of the previous eu subsidy in 2024 with the remaining money due to be reinvested in farming under the “public money for public goods” policy. by 2028 the practice of subsidising farmers per acre in england will have been eliminated, the government says.

brexit is an unmitigated disaster. there isn’t a single metric that shows it’s a success. we even have less control over our boarders. the only solution is to rejoin the whole shebang or at least the common market and customs unx with the associated return of free movement. it’s the only way.
and i believe the same is true for the fishing industry.
it's hard to find too many people who have gained anything from brexit.
i am actually part of that tiny group that has benefited financially from leaving the eu, but i would happily give up those benefits, if we could undo the massive and widespread harm caused by johnson, gove and farage, and return to full eu membership.
unless they subscribed to a “brexit as protectionist” expectation, farmers were crazy to support it. the deal they had in the eu was better than they’ll get outside it in 90% of likely scenarios.
i live in a rural area and the farmers were so smug when the brexit vote was leave.
the vote brexit signs were everywhere on the farms around here. the farmers unx came out and said brexit was a bad idea but the farmers were all for it. the turkeys did vote for christmas.
we're only seeing the negative reality
we’re only seeing the reality that anyone with a modicum of economic knowledge warned them about. yet farmers overwhelmingly supported brexit. if it didn’t impact us all, i’d be laughing, but sadly like a lot of people, they were deceived
i think that saying people were 'deceived', whilst accurate to a point, goes too far in the direction of absolving people for making a stupid decision which has, in most instances, harmed not just themselves but others who didn't make the same stupid decision.
i think the fundamental problem was the average person was never equipped to make a decision like this. most people didn’t have the ability to obxtively review the situation and so bowed to propaganda and a promise.
i think this quote sums it up
think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
some of what's required there, of course, is acknowledging that you aren't an expert on geopolitics and macroeconomics and listening to credible-sounding arguments being made by those who are more informed. not that anyone is infallible, of course, but we should normally give the opinions of people with relevant experience and knowledge more weight.
of course, people were encouraged to see anyone with experience as being compromised or biased because they were almost all saying it was a bad idea, and to embrace the viewpoint that nobody really knew anything, so you could just choose your favourite rhetoric.
as a fundamentally liberal person who has spent their life since early teens viewing democracy (by which i mean modern, western style democracy) as the 'least bad', if not 'best', approach, the past few years in particular have made me really question whether i believe it any more.
some of the facts that are always ignored/dismissed by those who defend it (and in far too many cases start screaming 'fascist' and other nonsense at those challenging it) are... well, facts.
'democracy' can take many forms. democracy is not the only viable form of government. blends are possible.
there's nothing 'undemocratic' about proposing an overhauled voting system that is heavily weighted in favour of particular demographics (though the obstacles to implementing this, without moving quite far away from democracy in the process, are rather great).
there's nothing inherently 'undemocratic' about removing humans from the political decision making process to some extent, or entirely.
the democratic system in the uk effectively sees the views and votes of millions ignored. planning, as millions do, on voting for a somewhat competent, professional lib dem type, or a ranting ukip-esque loon? good luck getting any representation in parliament.
the average uk voter is, at least when it comes to voting, a fucking imbecile. most people i associate with, whether friends, family or in work, are fairly smart. when it comes to politics? fairly fucking clueless. economics? the same. holding coherent positions on social and other matters generally? take a guess.
it's hard to feel too much sympathy for them, as farmers strongly voted in favour of brexit. you'd think that they know that you reap what you sow.
